I spent thirty-two years as a civil engineer with the Michigan Department of Transportation before retiring in 2011. My wife Carol and I moved down to Sarasota in 2013 for the weather and the golf, and we haven't looked back. We live near Siesta Key, close to our daughter's family.
Carol passed away in February 2022 after a short illness. These days I keep busy with golf three mornings a week at Prestancia, the Sarasota Sailing Squadron, and a weekly bridge group at the Southgate Community Center. My son Michael set up this page for me so old colleagues and friends from Michigan can track me down.
Golf, sailing, bridge, anything to do with Michigan Wolverines football (Go Blue!). I have been getting more interested in photography since retirement — mostly landscapes and wildlife out on the Myakka River State Park trails.
I have been doing more of my own financial planning since Carol passed and I no longer have someone to double-check things with me. I have a modest pension from MDOT, some IRAs, and a brokerage account that I am trying to manage more actively now that I have the time. I am not always confident I have the right structure for this stage of life, and I am open to speaking with a fee-only financial adviser who works with retirees if anyone in the Sarasota area has a recommendation.
I am also keeping an eye on my Social Security and Medicare situation — some of these rules are genuinely confusing and I find I get better information talking to someone directly than trying to sort through government websites.
